Five Ways to Get a Head Start on Spring Cleaning

The fresh air really hit me this morning -- Ah! It's finally almost spring, and I can feel it the moment I step outside. I love that crisp morning air, it gives me so much life and so much energy for my day ahead. On weekends, it's enough energy to motivate me to start spring cleaning. In fact, I've already started on the house and am ready for the warmer weather. With our wedding coming up in June I know that the next few months are going to be hectic, so I'm glad I got a head start on spring cleaning.

I encourage everyone to spring clean annually. Whether it mean purging old clothes, cleaning out the fridge or just getting highlights in your hair, there is something to be said about a fresh start to warmer, brighter seasons.

We've been in our house for almost a year now, so a lot of my spring cleaning has been focused around the house, and around feeling more settled and making it more homey. I spent many months this winter picking out paint colours and trying to get the big decorating decisions out of the way. Now it's time to find seasonal accents that will work with our very country décor. If you need some spring cleaning inspiration follow my 5 step spring cleaning process below!

1. Clean swap your cosmetics and cleaning products

Now is the best time to start swapping out cosmetics and cleaning products for safer, better options. Why? Because now is the time when you'll want different coloured cosmetics, and softer, fresher scents around the home.

For cleaner skincare suggestions, I recommend reading Clean Your Routine, a previous post I wrote. And for cleaner beauty product suggestions, message me. I can help you find safer options from Beautycounter that can outperform your existing cosmetics, with fewer ingredients! One of my favourite clean beauty swaps to date has been my YSL concealer for an almost exact Beautycounter match (they even look the same!) except I know the Beautycounter concealer is safe. How do I know? Besides reading the ingredients, I can feel the difference under my eyes. My old concealer used to cause my eyes to burn but the Beautycounter concealer doesn't irritate my eyes at all.

For safer home cleaning products, I recommend the brand LOVEFRESH, a brand out of Toronto -- y'all know I love supporting Canadian brands! Their line of Home + Cottage cleaning products is my favourite. The scents are perfect for Spring, and chemical-free. We are currently using the Rosemary Mint of their Marble and Granite Cleaner. It is one of the most-used cleaning products in our home since we tend to spend most of our time in the kitchen. All of their products are scented with essential oils, and are safe for kids and pets! For some of my other safe home cleaning favourites read my post A Cleaner, Safer Home.

2. Switch over your wardrobe

If you follow me on Instagram, you know I love to shop. My Sundays are reserved for prancing around the mall, grocery shopping and meal planning. Before winter even really arrived, I was already browsing the racks for spring clothes. I am not a huge fan of winter or winter clothes, so I spend most of the cold months collecting a spring and summer wardrobe, and stocking up on vacation essentials. But switching over your wardrobe really means that spring is HERE, so tuck away all those heavy wool sweaters, thick socks, scarves and boots, and get those spring essentials front and centre of your closet. While you are switching over your wardrobe, now is a good time to try things on and let go of the things that no longer fit right or bring you "joy," as Marie Kondo would say. You can try to sell your out of season clothes at stores like Plato's Closet or the Kind Exchange, or donate them to a local women's shelter.

3. Brighten up your décor with flowers

Cleaner, whiter spaces can make a room appear larger, and make you feel lighter. Every spring I look forward to swapping out Winter décor for brighter, fresher pieces that can make my space feel more airy. This spring I am very into blush pinks, soft blues, golden accents and oak-stained furniture.

My favourite spring flowers are Peonies. I chose our upcoming wedding date around peony season. There are about 2 weeks a year that our backyard peonies bloom, but with my new Wayfair.ca silk flowers, I can literally have peonies out year-round. That being said, I don't. But, this past weekend I thought it was time to take out the spring blooms and tuck away my winter centrepiece - until next year!

Some of my other spring faux flowers from Wayfair.ca are pictured (and linked) below!

Our amazing ottoman (it's literally one of my favourite pieces in our home) was purchased from Wayfair.ca last year. I couldn't find the exact one anymore, but I am linking a similar one here.

4. Add plants to your home

This year we added some plant babies to our home. Since we are finally settled in our "forever" home we felt like we could finally own plants without a concern for transporting them in the near future. In 4 years we have moved a lot, but now we are here for good! So we went to Sheridan Nurseries and got a sweet little snake plant and a fiddle leaf fig tree. We were also gifted two money trees, both of which I nursed back to life. I think Tyler is proud of my new found green thumb - I have to prove I am capable of caring for a vegetable garden this summer.

The problem with owning plants, especially tropical plants, is getting the lighting just right so your new babies can thrive. Unfortunately for some, owning real plants isn't possible OR owning the plant you WANT isn't possible. Fortunately, Wayfair.ca has some really beautiful artificial plants that can add greenery to your space without the maintenance and worry. I especially love their faux fig trees for darker spaces, since real fiddle leaf figs require A LOT of sunlight. These are my favourite from Wayfair.ca. I am thinking of getting some artificial plants for our front entryway, since there isn't enough natural light for a real plant to thrive! (Click the image to shop)

5. Switch up your room scent

I love candles, I think they add such a nice ambience to a room any time of year. They are also a fun and functional accent piece that can easily transform your room. Local candle artisan, Wick and Bear, a company out of Sarnia, Ontario, make the sweetest soy candles, which burn clean for a toxin-free seasonal room scent. For spring I am loving the Bergamot + Orange candle, which is a blend of bergamot, orange, grapefruit and lemon essential oils. Besides being a company owned and operated by a serious #girlboss, Wick and Bear is committed to the environment and encourages shoppers to reuse the glass containers once the candle has burned out, or return the glass jars to be made into another candle!
