Our Wedding: My Makeup

As many of you know, I have decided to do my own wedding makeup. Why? Because most makeup artists make me look scary. I am not a fan of the overdone look, I want to look like myself on my wedding day – but with a little extra lipstick and fuller lashes…

I decided to take some makeup lessons to prepare for the big day, and connected with Tara Leydon, a makeup artist and beauty blogger in Toronto. She is SO sweet, and I absolutely love her natural makeup style. We spent a snowy Sunday morning playing with makeup while she taught me brush techniques and I ooh’d and ahh’d over her beautifully decorate home. I left that day with an extensive list of top quality products I NEED to buy for my wedding day makeup kit – she only uses the BEST of the best!

Here are some of the products I won’t be able to live without on the day of my wedding:

Primer: Tatcha The Silk Canvas
Every flawless face begins with the perfect primer. But most primers contain breakout causing silicone. The Silk Canvas is silicone-free, and preps your skin, blurring pores, creating the perfect base for your makeup.

Foundation: Makeup Forever Matte Velvet Skin Full Coverage Foundation in "Y245
While I have searched high and low for a full coverage "clean" foundation, I still haven't found one good enough for my wedding day. I have however found this Makeup Forever matte full coverage foundation, which does exactly what it promises to do. It goes on velvety smooth and covers amazingly. It also blends seamlessly to give me a natural looking makeup look.

Concealer: Beautycounter Touchup Skin Concealer Pen in "Light"
This should be a staple in everyone's makeup bag. It is the most amazing, natural looking full coverage concealer. It works wonders on dark circles and hides imperfections seamlessly.

Setting Powder: Nude by Nature Radiant Loose Powder Foundation in "Classic Beige"
Using a powder foundation as a setting powder might seem extreme, but for your wedding you'll want to ensure optimal coverage. In real life it might look scary, but in photos you will look flawless. I love this powder foundation by Nude by Nature because it doesn't settle into fine lines and actually works perfectly as a setting powder. It doesn't have enough coverage to provide a foundation-like look for me, but it's great for midday touchups.

Blush: Nude by Nature Cashmere Pressed Blush in "Soft Coral"
I love this blush, it goes on smooth and isn't too bright. It has just enough colour to make you look healthy without making you look overdone. The coral tone is also perfect for mimicking a summer glow.

Bronzer: Beautycounter Radiant All Over Bronzer in "Dune"
This is my go-to bronzer all year round. It is buildable and perfect. From the moment I first tried it I became obsessed and quickly turned away from my cult favour - Nars "Laguna - which I had been using for 5+ years. I won't be getting married without it... seems weird but those who have found the perfect bronzer know what I mean. When you know you know!

Eyeshadow: Beautycounter Velvet Eyeshadow Palette in "Classic"
I am not a huge fan of eyeshadow, and I don't wear it often. But I do love every single hue in this palette and chose it for my wedding day because of the beautiful "penny" right there in the middle.

Mascara: Glossier Lash Slick in "Black"
Though I will be getting lash extensions, Tara advised me to put an extra coat of mascara on top of my lash extension JUST on my wedding day. I know this is a major no-no, but I just do what I'm told ... hehe. I'll be using one of her favourite mascara's, Glossier Lash Slick in black. It's lengthening and smudge proof, perfect for a long day of festivities and photos.

Brows: Beautycounter Brilliant Brow Gel in "Medium"
While I get my brows tinted regularly at Caryl Baker Visage, I love this brow gel for keeping my brows in place during the day. It also delivers the perfect amount of tint to fill in any bare spots and gives me perfect face framing brows.

Lip Balm: Boosh Lip Plumping Balm
Infused with Hyaluronic Acid and Peppermint Oil, this plumping balm delivers the most amazing amount of moisture. I don't leave home without it, and it will serve as the perfect base under my lipstick on our big day! I also advise using this the night before your wedding so you wake up with plump and moist lips, ready for your close ups!

Lipstick: Boosh Lipstick in "Bobbie"
Since I was so obsessed with the Plumping Balm, I decided to order a pretty little shade of pink from Boosh and hoped it would be the perfect hue for our wedding day. I got "Bobbie" and while I love the colour, it is certainly a Summer hue. I probably won't wear it until Spring comes, but I was bang-on when I thought it would be the perfect hue for our wedding - it's a soft pink-beige. Boosh creator, Sarah, hit the nail on the head when she created her line of lip products. They deliver the right amount of moisture and colour, and they contain no nasty ingredients!

Tools: Beautycounter Essential Brush Collection
This collection of brushes features a Fan Powder Brush for bronzer, powder and highlighter, an Angled Blush Brush, All-Over Eye Brush and Crease Eye Brush. Made of high performing bristles, these are 100% animal hair-free.
